How old is your home?

ZIP-level data gives you the neighborhood pattern. Your home's actual year built tells the real story. Lead paint was banned in 1978, and lead solder for water pipes wasn't banned until 1986.

Your home

Found risk in your ZIP? Now confirm what's actually in your home.

The single highest-confidence way to find lead in your home is to test the actual surfaces and dishware. Our drop kit reveals lead paint, lead glaze, and lead solder in seconds. Bright green glow on contact.

Why a zip-level read matters.

I'm Eric. I started DetectLead because most of the parents emailing me already had a kid with elevated blood lead. One of the first things every pediatrician asks is "how old is your house?" because lead paint was banned in 1978 and lead solder in plumbing wasn't banned until 1986. Your zip tells you the odds before you spend a dollar.

The EPA just published the 2025 update to the 7th drinking water infrastructure needs survey. 4 million lead service lines still in the ground. The screener above maps your state's projected tier and your zip's pre-1978 housing percentage in one read. Then it tells you what to do.

Your zip tells you the odds. The only test that counts is the one on the pipe in your basement, the paint on your window, the plate in your kid's hand.

How the kit closes the loop.

The screener is the read. The kit is the audit. One drop of Fluoro-Spec on paint, glaze, or solder. Lead glows perovskite green under 365 nm UV in 30 seconds. Chemistry published in nature, 2014. I didn't invent it. I just built the bottle.

Daniella · 4 months

"my daughter was at 3.4 µg/dL. we ran the ZIP Screener and our area was elevated. Tested every plate and surface. Half the plates glowed. Four months after we replaced them, undetectable."

Dr. Jessica · 8 months

"both kids elevated. Zip was high-risk. We found lead in three places: vintage plates, an imported bowl, my coffee mug. Eight months later, undetectable."

The kit that finds the actual source in your house tonight.

Your zip says it's likely. The kit tells you which surface. Paint chips on the window. Glaze on a plate. Solder under a faucet. One drop, 30 seconds, you know.

The questions I get the most.

My zip came back low. Am I safe?

Your area is lower-risk. Your specific house might still be the exception. If your home is pre-1986, ask your water utility about the lcrr inventory. And run cold water for 30 seconds every morning before you drink or cook. Lead leaches more when water sits in pipes overnight.

My zip came back high. What do I do tonight?

Three steps. (1) run cold water 30 seconds every morning, every tap, before anyone drinks. (2) get an nsf/ansi 53 certified-for-lead filter on your kitchen tap (brita elite or pur lead reduction, check the box). (3) test the actual surfaces in your house. The kit does paint, glaze, and solder in 30 seconds.

Does it work on water itself?

No. Fluoro-Spec is for solid lead in paint, glaze, and solder. For water you want an ICP-MS tap-water test from a certified lab (tap score or simplelab). but if the screener says your state is in EPA tier 4 or 5, just put on a filter today. The lab confirms what the filter already removes.

What if my kid's blood lead is already elevated?

Call your pediatrician. Then call us at 631-461-1838 or email Eric@DetectLead.com. Don't buy a kit yet. When blood lead is confirmed elevated, the right next step is a guided audit, not a single drip bottle. We'll talk through what to test first and in what order.

My zip didn't return data. Why?

Some rural zcta boundaries don't perfectly match usps zips and have no census data. Try a neighboring zip in your county. The state-level EPA tier still applies.
