Lead in psyllium husk, and whether it can explain a high blood lead result.
Short version: every psyllium product that has been through a real lab test had some lead in it. So it is a fair suspect. But the arithmetic says a daily scoop, even a bad one, moves an adult's blood lead by a fraction of a point. If two adults in the same house both test high, the psyllium is worth ruling out and then you keep looking. This page does both: the psyllium facts, then a short quiz that ranks the other sources for your house.

You said you were taking Organic India whole husk and Mercola organic whole husk, daily, both of you. Here is what is actually on record for each.
Organic India, Psyllium Whole Husk
Tested. Lowest lead in the ConsumerLab panelConsumerLab bought it, ran ICP-MS, and it came in at about 0.6 µg of lead per tablespoon, the lowest of the nine products and their top pick. Two tablespoons a day is roughly 1.2 µg, or 14% of the FDA adult daily reference of 8.8 µg. As psyllium goes this is the good one.
One caveat so you have the whole picture: on July 11, 2025 the company got a California Prop 65 notice for lead in three other products (the Psyllium Pre & Probiotic Fiber Cinnamon Spice, the Liver Kidney cleanser, and the Moringa powder). The plain whole husk was not named. Lots change, so a current lot number and COA is still worth asking for.
Mercola, Organic Whole Husk Psyllium
No public test result foundI could not find an independent lab test, a ConsumerLab entry, or a Prop 65 notice for this one. That is not a clean bill, it just means nobody has published a number. Mercola sells it with heavy-metal testing language on the site, so they should have a lot-specific certificate of analysis.
Ask them for it. Email or call with the lot number off your container and ask for the heavy metals COA with lead in ppm by ICP-MS. Then put the number into the calculator below. If they will not send a number, treat it as the unknown it is and switch to the one that has been tested.
What this means for two adults with high blood lead. Blood lead is roughly proportional to daily intake. Using the standard adult slope, 1 µg of lead eaten per day adds about 0.04 µg/dL. Organic India at two tablespoons a day is about 0.05 µg/dL. Even the RASFF-flagged Indian lot at 4.4 ppm, at 10 grams a day, would be about 44 µg/day and roughly 1.8 µg/dL. A result that a doctor calls "extremely high" is not coming from the fiber alone.
The sensible move is to stop the psyllium for now anyway (methylcellulose covers the same job and has no soil lead), get the COAs, and spend the real effort on the sources further down this page that are known to push adults into the 10s and 20s.
Why our kit is the wrong tool for the powder, and what the right one is
The Fluoro-Spec kit works by reacting with lead sitting on a surface, like the paint on a plate or the glaze on a mug. You spray it, shine the UV light, and the leaded spot glows green. That reaction needs a solid lead compound in one place at a fairly high concentration. Lead in a food powder is the opposite situation. It is spread through the whole bag at a few tenths of a part per million, bound up inside plant fiber. Nothing you can hold in your hand will see that.
The only method that reliably measures lead at these levels in food is ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry). It is a lab instrument. The sample gets digested in acid and the instrument counts lead atoms. That is what ConsumerLab used, what the FDA uses, and what a supplier's certificate of analysis is supposed to be based on. If you want your own bag measured, SimpleLab sells a mail-in supplement heavy metals kit (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, about ten business days), and Brooks Applied Labs in Seattle or Eurofins in Madison, WI will take a consumer sample if you call.
Where the lead in psyllium comes from
Psyllium is the seed husk of Plantago ovata. Almost the entire world supply is grown in India, mostly Gujarat and Rajasthan. Like any crop, the plant pulls minerals out of the soil and irrigation water as it grows, and it does not sort lead from calcium on the way in. The husk is the outer coat of the seed, so it also picks up field dust and fine mineral grit during harvest. Cleaning gets most of that off. It does not get all of it.
It varies by lot. The same brand can be clean one month and not the next, because the husk came from a different field. A well-sourced lot runs around 0.05 ppm lead. An average lot runs closer to 0.5 ppm. In April 2025 the EU's food alert system flagged an Indian psyllium lot at 4.4 ppm. The usual supplier spec is "under 1 ppm," which sounds strict and is not.

FDA interim reference levels for lead from food: 2.2 µg per day for a child, 8.8 µg per day for an adult. A "meets spec" bag at 1 ppm taken twice a day puts an adult over that line from the psyllium alone, which is a real reason to care about it. It is still a fraction of a point of blood lead. Run your own bag
When a brand sends you the lead number from a certificate of analysis (ppm and mg/kg are the same thing), put it in with how much you take. This is just multiplication, but it is the multiplication the label never does for you.
Two adults, same house, water tested clean, built in 1990. Where it usually comes from.
When a couple both test high, the source is something they share: the food, the dishes, the hobby dust in the house, or one person's activity tracking in on the other. A 1990 house is past the 1978 lead paint ban and the 1986 lead solder ban, and you already cleared the water. That pushes the odds toward the list below, roughly in the order I would check them.
Firearms, including "not a lot"
The CDC's adult surveillance program now lists firearm use and maintenance as the most common non-work source of elevated blood lead in US adults. The lead is in the primer smoke and the bullet dust, and it ends up in the range bag, the truck, the clothes, and wherever the guns get cleaned. Cleaning solvent strips lead from the barrel onto the rags and the bench, and that dust spreads through the house. Spouses who never touch a gun test high from take-home dust. Indoor ranges are the worst case. In the national NHANES data, people shooting 10,000+ rounds a year ran about 21% higher blood lead than non-shooters even after adjusting for house age and job.
Check first: where the guns are cleaned, the range bag, the washing machine area, the truck floor. This is exactly what our kit finds.
Venison or other game shot with lead ammunition
Lead bullets fragment. Fragments have been found up to 18 inches from the wound channel in rifle-killed deer, and 53% of donated venison in North Dakota food banks had metal fragments on x-ray. A German study of game shot with lead ammo found households eating game regularly took in 7 to 8 times the average dietary lead. Ground venison is the worst form because the fragments get mixed through the whole batch. This one hits both people at the table equally, which fits a couple both testing high.
Ask: do you eat game, who processed it, what ammo. If yes, stop the ground meat first and switch to copper ammo going forward.
Dishes, mugs, cookware, and crystal
Lead glaze and lead paint on ceramics leach into hot and acidic food and drink every day. Vintage and thrifted pieces, imported pottery, a favorite decorated coffee mug, the lead crystal decanter that whiskey or wine sits in for weeks, unlined pewter or brass. Both of you eat off the same dishes, so this is another shared source that fits.
Check: anything decorated that touches food or drink, and anything that holds liquid for days. This is the other thing our kit is built for.
The other supplements and spices in the cabinet
If you take psyllium daily you probably take other things daily too. Turmeric and imported spices, Ayurvedic and herbal products, moringa and greens powders, plant protein, bone-based calcium. Several of these have far worse lead records than psyllium. Organic India's own moringa powder was in their 2025 notice.
List everything both of you take. Search each product at the California notice database and ConsumerLab. Pause the plant powders while you sort it out.
Hobbies and work
Stained glass and soldering, pottery glazes, casting fishing sinkers or bullets, stripping paint on antiques or an older second property, radiator or auto restoration, battery work, construction. Any of these makes lead dust that comes home on hands, clothes, and shoes.
If either of you does one of these, test the work area, the car, and the laundry.
Old lead that is already in the body
You said the results pointed to past as well as recent exposure. Lead stores in bone for decades and comes back into the blood when bone turns over, which speeds up with menopause, osteoporosis, pregnancy, thyroid problems, and long bed rest. A retained bullet or shot fragment from any old injury does the same. This will not explain a fresh jump, but it can keep a number from coming down after the source is gone.
Worth raising with the doctor if the number stays up after the house is clean.

Pause the psyllium and get both COAs
Switch to methylcellulose for now. Email Organic India and Mercola with your lot numbers and ask for the heavy metals certificate of analysis, lead in ppm, ICP-MS. Put the numbers in the calculator above. Cheap exclusion, done in a week.
Walk the gun trail with a UV light
Where the guns get cleaned, the bench, the rags, the range bag, the truck floor mats, the laundry area, the door he comes in through. This is the single most common reason two adults in a clean-water modern house both test high, and it is a five minute test.
Answer the game meat question honestly
If there is venison in the freezer, find out what ammo took it and who ground it. Ground game from a lead bullet is the highest-dose food most people ever eat.
Test the dishes and the supplement shelf
Every decorated piece that touches food, the crystal, the daily mug. Then list every supplement and spice both of you take and search each one at the California notice database. Retest blood in a couple of months after removing whatever you find, on your doctor's timing. Blood lead has a half-life of about a month, so a real source removal shows up fast.
