detectlead, in one page

detectlead.com is where you find out whether lead is in your house, your dishes, or your kid's food before it ends up in your kid. it's run by Eric Ritter and built around Fluoro-Spec, a lead test you read with your own eyes in thirty seconds.

the test

Fluoro-Spec is fluorescence spectroscopy in a bottle. spray or drip the reagent on a dry surface, wait thirty seconds, shine the included 365nm UV light. green glow means lead. no glow means clean. no app, no lab, nothing shipped anywhere. the chemistry reacts only to lead ions, so rust, soap, and pigment can't fake a positive the way they fool hardware-store swabs.

it's the only glow-based lead kit cleared for sale by the EPA (TSCA Section 5 LVE L-25-0206), and the method behind it is peer-reviewed, published in Analytica Chimica Acta, Van Geen et al. (2024), co-authored by Eric.

what you can check

paint, the invisible dust on a windowsill, pre-1986 plumbing solder, old or imported dishes, costume jewelry, painted toys and everyday goods. one Full Kit ($75) carries a spray bottle, a drip bottle, the UV light, a reference card, and an extender ring, with enough reagent to test your whole home and have some left over.

the rest of the site

detectlead isn't just a store. there are full walk-throughs for the situations that actually send people looking: a baby on the way, a pre-1978 house, a cabinet of hand-me-down dishes, being 55+ with grandkids around, and your very first test. there's a free calculator that turns the food your kid actually eats into micrograms per day of lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury across 1,343 foods.

and there's the number the whole site keeps coming back to: dose in µg/day, not a scary concentration, because that's the only number that tells you whether to act.

why it exists

because there is no safe level of lead in a child's blood, the damage doesn't undo, and almost everyone who finds it finds it too late. the whole point of this site is to move that moment earlier. test the thing. not the kid.
