Let's Talk About Water — Finding Out Will Only Cost a Penny

Lead is a serious topic. Drinking water is one of the more solvable parts of the lead exposure problem — once you know how to look at it.

The standard you should be testing against

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that drinking water contain less than 1 part per billion (PPB) of lead for children's safety. The federal "action level" used by the EPA Lead and Copper Rule is higher (15 PPB), but that's a regulatory trigger for utilities, not a health-based limit for kids. If you have small children, target the AAP number.

Why the cheap home test kits don't work

Here's the honest part: there is no color-changing chemical method that reliably tests drinking water for lead at the PPB range. The chemistries we use for lead in paint (sodium rhodizonate, methylammonium-bromide perovskite — including the Detect Lead swabs and Fluoro-Spec reagent) work great on surfaces at PPM concentrations. They cannot resolve a few parts per billion in a glass of water.

The $30 home water test kits you see on Amazon are mostly misleading on this point. If you want a real number, you need a certified lab analysis of a properly collected first-draw sample (more on collection below).

The penny test — for free

The single best free thing you can do is identify your incoming water service line. Find the pipe where city water enters your home (usually basement, near the meter). Then:

  • Lead: Soft, dull silver-gray. Scratch it gently with a penny — lead will deform and show a shiny silver scratch underneath.
  • Copper: Reddish-brown, hard. The penny does nothing.
  • Galvanized steel: Silver-gray, magnetic. A magnet sticks. Lead does not stick to a magnet.

If you have a lead service line, it's a good idea to install a filter immediately while you arrange testing or replacement.

Doing it right when you do test

Worst-case lead in tap water comes from water that has been sitting in the pipes for several hours. Two collection scenarios capture that:

  • First draw, morning: first water out of the tap when you wake up.
  • After prolonged sit: first water out after the home has been empty for a few hours.

Submit a sample to a certified water-testing lab. Your state environmental health office can refer you to certified labs in your area. Most charge $20–$50 per sample.

If you need a filter, get the right one

Lead-reducing filters carry the NSF/ANSI Standard 53 certification. Look for those exact words on the box. A bunch of pitcher and faucet filters are NSF/ANSI Standard 42 (taste and odor) — those will not remove lead. Standard 53 is the lead spec.

Even with new plumbing, brass and chrome-plated fixtures can leach trace lead — federal "lead-free" plumbing fittings are allowed up to 0.25% lead by weight. Filtering at the point of use (kitchen sink, fridge dispenser) is the practical answer for drinking water.

The risk model

Real lead-in-water risk concentrates in two situations:

  • You have a lead service line connecting your house to the city main, AND
  • Your water utility isn't conditioning the water properly — i.e., not maintaining pH and corrosion-control chemistry that keeps lead from leaching out of the pipe wall.

The Flint, Michigan crisis was case (b) failing on top of case (a). Most U.S. cities with significant lead service line populations are on (a) but get away with not catastrophically failing because (b) is being maintained. The EPA has set a goal of replacing all lead service lines in the country within ten years. Chicago, the city with by far the most lead service lines, is actively at work.

The four-step plan

  1. ID the source. Penny test on the service line. Confirm whether you have a lead pipe.
  2. Avoid the source. If yes — install an NSF/ANSI Standard 53 filter immediately. Run cold tap for 30 seconds before collecting drinking water from a fixture that's been sitting.
  3. Mitigate future exposure. Get the water tested. Look into service line replacement (often subsidized by your utility or municipality).
  4. Move on to something more fun. Once the source is handled, you don't need to think about it anymore. That's the point.

Test with kits, not kids

The CDC recommends blood lead level testing in children at ages 1 and 2. That's reasonable as a safety net. But blood-lead screening is a downstream catch — it tells you a child has already been exposed.

The better default is to test the environment first. Identify lead in your water, your paint, your soil, your dust — and remove the source. A child whose home is properly tested and remediated is one who doesn't need to rely on the safety-net blood test in the first place.
